Organised by The Cyprus Third Age Observatory (CTAO) as result of the first AGE regranting scheme, the high-level event on “Healthy and Dignified Ageing” mobilized six political groups and two candidates for Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) for the upcoming European election around age and ageing.
Under the auspices of the President of the Republic of Cyprus, the event took place on 8th December 2023 at the Presidential Palace in Larnaca.
Opened by the President of CTAO, the conference featured distinguished guests such as:
- the President of Cyprus, Mr. Nikos Christodoulides,
- the Ministers of Health, Mrs. Popi Kanari, Minister of Justice, Mrs. Anna Prokopiou, Minister of Interior, Mr. Constantinos Ioannou, Minister of Labour and Social Insurance, Mr. Yiannis Panayiotou, the Deputy Minister of Social Welfare, Mrs. Marilena Evangelou and the Deputy Minister of Tourism, Mr. Kostas Koumis,
- the Cyprus Commissioner of Human Rights, Mrs. Maria Lottides,
- the Vice-President of the European Commission and Commissioner of Democracy and Demography, Dubravka Suiça,
- the Heads of the European Commission and the European Parliament Offices in Cyprus, Mrs. Myrto Zambarta and Mr. Andreas Kettis,
- two MEPs, Mr. Costas Mavrides and Mrs. Elissavet Vozemberg-Vrionidi,
- the Cyprus Church and five representatives from the major political parties.
- AGE Secretary General, Maciej Kucharczyk, also provided an opening speech and a contribution speech, alongside AGE member Hellas50+, represented by Elizabeth Mestheneos and Myrto Maria Ranga.

The conference garnered remarkable attention, attracting a diverse audience of 130 attendees. This group included representatives from various governmental departments, political parties, NGOs, and other key stakeholders.
Among the main achievement of this event, it should be noted that a Cyprus MEP took the initiative to assemble an informal committee of MEPs dedicated to promoting AGE’s views. This is a significant step towards influencing policy and enhancing the well-being of older individuals at both the national and European levels.
Congratulations to the team at CTAO and to all the distinguished speakers and contributors to such a successful outcome of the first AGE regranting scheme in Cyprus!
