“Older and younger generations specifically call on the European Parliament to recognise the complementary contributions that younger and older people make to society, and to protect, respect, and fulfil the rights of all people living in the EU.”

As the political landscape evolves and the challenges facing Europe become more complex, it is imperative to emphasize the significance of intergenerational solidarity in the upcoming European elections in 2024. In an era marked by rapid technological advancements, climate change, and shifting demographics, the recognition of the benefits from collaboration between different age groups has never been more crucial.

This is why AGE Platform Europe, representing older people in Europe, and European Youth Forum representing Europe’s young people, worked together to produce an Intergenerational Declaration: United Across Nation.

This declaration has been written in the context of the project MEET Mobilise Europe = Engage Together, a 2-year project which aims to Debate European policies on a local level, celebrate democracy with citizens of all generations and mobilize activists for the elections.

This declaration is a tool to advocate for the importance of intergenerational dialogue, understanding and connection at all levels in society, which allows for a deeper appreciation of current issues while ensuring better decisions for the future. AGE Platform celebrates the solidarity between generations for years and have been leading a campaign to instore an EU Day on Solidarity between Generations the 29th of April each year. See AGE positions and events on solidarity between generations.

Older and younger generations specifically call on the European Parliament to recognise the complementary contributions that younger and older people make to society, and to protect, respect, and fulfil the rights of all people living in the EU.

“We call on the European Institutions to prioritise ending age discrimination during the 2024-2029 political cycle.”

With this declaration, older and younger people encourage every citizen to act and engage, politically as well as sustainably, with an awareness of the future generations so that the decisions taken today leave a positive footprint for tomorrow, for people and the planet.
